Marlo had never enjoyed a party.
He enjoyed pretending he was an explorer, a fisherman, sometime a lone mountain goat.
He enjoyed pressing his fingertips to inanimate objects
feeling his pulse bounce off their plastic suits,
like they had their own heartbeat.
Sometimes he would stroll those same fingertips along the floor, picking up stray lint
in imitation of a dung beetle he saw in a documentary once.
Though the other children ignored him, he liked it better that way
quietly observing the folds of their clothing
that made shapes like
hillsides.
